Why the Armenians' faith helped them to survive the Genocide

By: Susan Garabedian

Faith in God is what helps us through the difficult times in our life. God is a very wonderful person and is the one to go to when you need help. If you have faith in God you would survive.

The Armenians survived the Genocide because they believed in God. Many people did not survive, but the ones that survived had a lot of faith in themselves as Armenians and faith in God. Faith in God is good because of all the people that survived the Genocide. All of the Armenians today believe in God. I, myself, believe in God because of all the things he has done for my family and me.

God and our faith both made a big difference during the Genocide that helped the Armenians get through.

First, our faith gave the Armenians strength. The strength to carry on through the deserts that reached for so many miles. Also, our faith gave the Armenians bravery. The bravery to fight back and rebel against the turks. But the most important thing that our faith brought to the Armenians when they needed it the most was hope. The hope that the new day would bring freedom. The faith that the Armenian people believe in made all the difference to help our people win the Genocide.

God helped the Armenian race in the Massacre by giving them the strength to pray, which helped them survive. Their strong love of God and togetherness helped them to rebuild their homes, churches and community so future generations will continue to carry on the Armenian traditions.

Our faith helped us survive the Genocide. How you might ask? Well this is how. We Armenians

believe that we can make our dreams come true. If you believe, you can make your dreams come true, too. We are Christians and we should believe in our faith. If you don’t believe, you have no faith.

When the Genocide happened, all the Armenians were struggling to survive. They were beaten, not fed, had no water. But they still had their faith. After they escaped from the Genocide, they came to the United States and went to church. They still kept their faith.  They were proud and had more faith then before.  They believed that they were going to make it to a new home, a new generation, but still keep their religion, their faith, and their pride of being Armenian.

If I was an Armenian girl, lost, had not mother or father, and got separated from my sisters, I would feel lonesome, scared, but I would still keep my faith. If I or any other Armenian lost the faith that we have inside, they would have never made it to start the life that we have now. First, we were 2 million now what are we? We are now more than 7 million. Thanks to our ancestors who believed they could make it, the ones that were here to help you be here. If it wasn’t for your ancestors, you wouldn’t be here. If we all lost our faith, then what would become of this world? Who would know what happened when it was something bad? I know who. If you lost your faith then you would never find out. But you are not the one that knows. God. God isI the one that knows why, when, or what happened.

Baron Mamishian asked me a question. “What does it mean to be Armenian? What does it mean not to know who you are?” To be Armenian is your religion. It is what your ancestors have passed down to your grandparents, to your parents, and now to you.  To be Armenian is everything. If you have faith, joy, pride, and happiness then you are a true Armenian. Faith. Faith is what got you here today. If you have no faith, then God won’t help you get through tough situations. Only God knows the answer.

There are many ways that the Armenians' belief in God helped them survive the Genocide, but I will only talk about the most important ones of them, The first one is that since the Armenians deeply believed in God, they were willing to fight for their religion. The turkish did not expect this. They thought all the Armenians would just give up and follow their (muslim) religion. They were wrong!  So the Armenians had them surprised. After that immediate effect the turks could still wipe out all of the Armenian, but since the Armenians believed God would protect them, they kept on fighting and knew that God would help them survive. And even though the turkish killed so many Armenians, their Christian religion still clings on. This is how the Armenians' belief in God helped them survive the Genocide.
